AITEX is a Spanish non-profit making private association formed by textile and related companies. In the field of standardisation and quality, it has advanced testing laboratories that are authorised to award several certifications. It participates in various EC initiatives, supporting the Spanish companies in a growing No of diverse EU-funded projects. AITEX has carried or is carrying out a number of Projects under the V&VI&VIIPM Framework Programmes: “INTEX” (coordinated by AITEX), “BENTEX”, “MEDITEX” (coordinated by AITEX),, “TELEMARA” (coordinated by AITEX), “IKEMSATT”, “FEATHERS AND DOWN”, “FRESH”, “FASHION NET”, “ITE”, “FASHION TO FUTURE”, “DIGITEX”, “SEAT”, “PERSONA”,“SEAMLESS”, “SONO” and “WEAR-a-BAN”.  Also, AITEX has carried or is carrying out a number of LEONARDO DA VINCI projects (“CATEX-3D”, “ARIADNA” (coordinated by AITEX),“ADVOTTEX”, ”TEMPTEX”, ”SEWNEW”, “SMADETEX”,“E-FIBRE” and “NoSTRESS” (coordinated by AITEX)), INTERREG (AQUATEX for Textile Wasterwater Treatments and reusing) and has coordinated several LIFE projects:

“The application of advanced photo-oxidation techniques in the treatment of residual waters in the Textile industry”(LIFEENV99/E/346), “Water Purification Tertiary Treatment using Photo-oxidation at semi-industrial scale”(LIFE03 ENV/E/000102), “Alternatives for waste volume reduction in the textile sector through the application of minimisation measures in the production process and in the consumption”(LIFE05 ENV/E/000285) and “ Risk reduction to public health from environmental sources using biotechnology in the textile sector”(LIFE07/ENV/E/000794).

In relation with environmental activities our Quality and Environmental Dept has a broad experience in quality and environment issues carrying out activities such as: Initial Environmental Revision (IER), Implementation of an environmental management system according to ISO 14001, Elaboration of Environmental Impact Studies (EIS) for all textile companies affected, Environmental consulting services to respond to client issues on environment-related subjects: legislation, latest technologies for treatment of pollutants, waste management, etc,

Dealing with different types of environmental management as well as elaboration of technical projects and reports up to the moment of admission and approval by the Authorities, Plans to minimise toxic and dangerous waste to reduce sub-products and pollutants generated by a certain productive process, LEGISTEX (complete current environmental legislation and regulations which are applied to the textile sector, facilitating the query and consultation work), ACI (Authorised Control Institution) (periodical inspections and measurement of emissions for those activities that are considered to be potentially harmful to the atmosphere (Annex II of Decree 833/1975 on Atmospheric Environmental Protection). Carrying out periodical self controls and emission of conformity certificates required by the Authorities. Filling in the emission register book. Verifications of different equipment. We are Atmospheric Emissions Certified Body by ENAC (for stationary sources) to issue certificates according to the Spanish legislation. Also we are Authorised Control Body certified by Industry Conselleria (regional government). Nowadays we are preparing the documentation for the Application of Integrated Environmental Authorisation (IPPC) in 6 companies.

Other environmental projects: Quality Guide for home-textile sector (1996), Quality Guide for the weaving and knitting sector (1997), Study of the home-textiles sector concerning the quality culture as a competitive strategy (1997), Introduction to the quality management for the textile SMEs (CDROM)(1997), ISO 9000 in the spinning sub-sector(CDROM)(1997), Improvement of the knowledge in Excellent Model (EFQM) self-assessment for textile and Toy Industries (IKEMSATT, IST-2001-32018)(2006). Participation in the book Guide of Environmental Management in Textile-Clothing sector (where the points to be followed for the correct implementation of ISO 14000 in textiles companies are set out. For the production of these books a complete knowledge of the community, national legislations have been essential, 2001), Edition of Manual of Good Environmental Practice for the Textile Sector to preserve the environment (2001), Coating and lamination through Hot Melt (friendly-environment technique: water and dissolvent-free, atmospheric and water emission-free), Textile printing pastes waste reusing in construction materials, 2003. solution for textile products manufacturing according to product systematic design in the concurrent engineering, 2003. (Life-cycle analysis). Optimization of Pollution Levels of Water Proceeding from textile processes, 2002, Urban wastewater recycling and reusing in textile industry, Study of the biodegradability of the auxiliary chemical agents used in the Textile sector, aerobically, making possible the feasible reuse of the purified water in the production process, 2001 and more than 15 projects related to purification treatments, recycling and reusing textile wastewaters.

Regarding noise, the Textile Technology Institute, AITEX, has considerable knowledge of electrospinning technology and, as well, in the properties of polymeric nanofibre webs. Previous electrospinning projects have enabled the Institute to gain a position as one of the foremost centres in the national sphere and as an outstanding centre in achieving the transition from technology to a greater productive level.
